Nobel Laureate in Literature, 1992 Derek Walcott was born in 1931 in St. Lucia, one of the Windward Islands in the West Indies: I'm just a red nigger who love the sea, I had a sound colonial education, I have Dutch, nigger, and English in me, And either I'm nobody, or I'm a nation. He graduated from the University College of the West Indies, and in 1957 was awarded a fellowship by the Rockefeller Foundation to study American theater. He is the founder of the Trinidad Theater Workshop, and his plays have been produced by the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Negro Ensemble Company. In 1969, he received the Eugene O'Neill Foundation-Wesleyan University fellowship for playwrights. In 1981, he was a recipient of a five-year fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He is an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Derek Walcott has published many books of plays and verse, among which the much applauded epic poem Omeros in 1990. He has won several prizes, among which the Guinness Award for Poetry, a Royal Society of Literature Award, the Cholmondeley Prize, the Welsh Arts Council International Writers Prize, and the Queen's Medal for Poetry in 1988. In 1992 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment". Another poet, Iosif Brodskij, wrote in 1983: "Indeed, if there is a poet Walcott seems to have a lot in common with, it's nobody English but rather the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, or else the author of On the Nature of Things. For Walcott's descriptive powers are truly epic: what saves his lines from the corresponding tedium, though, is the shortage of the realm's actual history and the quality of his ear for the English language, whose sensibility in itself is a history".
