Gian-Carlo Rota was born in Vigevano, Italy in 1932. He began his studies in Italy before continuing at Princeton and Yale Universities in the United States. Among the illlustrious scholars at Princeton during his stay, were some of the greatest mathematicians of this century: Herman Weyl, Alonzo Church, Kurt Gödel, William Feller. And Albert Einstein. At Princeton, Rota developed his philosophical interests following courses with Szathmary and Rawls. In 1961, he became an American citizen; in 1965, he founded the Journal of Combinational Theory and, in 1967, Advances in Mathematics. After having taught in a number of universities in the United States, he is currently Professor of Mathematics and Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a consultant with the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the scientific committee of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. For many years, he has conducted a cycle of lessons for doctoral candidates in mathematics, computer science and philosophy in Italy. He is particularly well-known for his contribution to combinatorial analysis in mathematics and his studies regarding phenomenology in philosophy.
