Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1967 George Porter was born in West Riding, Yorkshire in 1920. He was educated at Leeds University and Cambridge, where in 1945 he began his graduate work and subsequently received his first teaching position. During the same period he began his first research on the photochemistry of gaseous free radicals, developing a device for flash photolysis and a technique for studying fast reactions in gases, which can be applied to many problems in physics, chemistry and biology. It was for these studies on fast chemical reactions, pursued throughout his career, that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967 (together with Manfred Eigen and Richard Norrish). After a brief period with the British Rayon Research Association, in 1955 he moved to the University of Sheffield, first as a professor and then as head of the Chemistry Department. From 1966 to 1985 he was Director and Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution and from 1985 to 1990 was President of the Royal Society. In 1987 he became Professor of Photochemistry at Imperial College, London, and subsequently Professor Emeritus and Chairman of the Centre for Photomolecular Science at the college. Porter has long been involved in scientific education and popularisation, participating in many television programmes and contributing to the preparation of an Open University chemistry course. He is a Foreign Member of the Accademia dei Lincei and many other science academies and associations. He was knighted in 1972 and became a Baron in 1990. His other interests are sailing and being second gardener (to his wife, Stella).
