Nebojsa Nakicenovic holds bachelor's and master's degrees in economics and computer science from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA and the University of Vienna, where he also completed his Ph.D.

In 1973 he joined the Energy Systems Program of IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis), a non-governmental and non-profit Institute studying issues of sustainability and the human dimensions of global change. He first worked on long-term, global energy prospects; from 1984 he worked in the Science and Technology Program on the restructuring of the global automotive industry; from 1986 on the dynamics of technological and social change in the Technology, Economy and Society Program, where he also had administrative responsibilities as Acting Program Leader and Project Leader. He has been the Project Leader of the Environmentally Compatible Energy Strategies Project at IIASA since its establishment in 1991. He is also the Director of the Studies Project on Energy Perspectives of the World Energy Council and lectures at the Technical University of Graz.

Nakicenovic is an Associate Editor of the International Journal on Technological Forecasting and Social Change, on the editorial board of Energy, the International Journal, and Evolutionary Economic Journal, a Convening Lead Author for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Member of the Energy and Environment Steering Committee of the World Bank, and a Principal Investigator on a number of grants including European Commission, National Science Foundation (USA), and Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Japan). Before joining IIASA, he was with the Research Center Karlsruhe, Germany, where he worked in the field of nuclear materials accountability.

Among Nakicenovic's research interests are the long-term patterns of technological change and economic development and, in particular, the evolution of energy, automotive and aerospace technologies. Currently, his research focuses on energy-related sources of global change, and on future development and response strategies for mitigating adverse environmental impacts. He is author and coauthor of many scientific papers and books on the dynamics of technological and social change, economic restructuring, mitigation of anthropogenic impacts on the environment and on response strategies to global change.
