Cesare Marchetti received his education in physics at the University and Scuola Normale of Pisa. In 1950 he joined the Center for Information Studies and Experiments in Milan as a researcher in physical chemistry and chemical engineering of heavy water production. From 1954 to 1955, he worked as a consultant with the National Atomic Energy Directorate in Buenos Aires. From 1955 to 1956, he was with the Battelle Institute in Geneva as a researcher in applied surface physics, dealing particularly with problems in the watch and railway industries. From 1957 to 1959, he was Head of the Physical Chemistry Section of Agip Nucleare, primarily concentrating on problems of fuels and materials for gas-cooled reactors. Marchetti joined EURATOM in 1959 and was its representative in Canada for two years, working in the field of reactor optimization. He returned to Europe in 1961 to the Common Center for Research (CCR) to become Head of the Physical Chemistry Division, later the Materials Division, a large institute devoted to the study of materials, fuel cycles, waste disposal, and energy transformations in various types of nuclear reactors. He first went to the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) of Laxenburg (Austria) in 1974 to contribute to research undertaken by the Energy Systems Program. Since then he has been involved in the work of various research groups and he is now an Institute Scholar. Marchetti is honorary member of the College of Engineers of Tuscany, board member of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, coeditor of the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and the Journal of Forecasting. He has published approximately 150 papers. In 1979 he received a Honorary Degree in Science from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, United Kingdom) and in 1995 he was awarded in Moscow the Kondratiev Silver Medal. |
