Nobel Laureate in Medicine, 1977 Roger C.L. Guillemin was born in Dijon, France in 1924. He received his medical degree in 1949 from the University of Lyon, where his interest in endocrinology began. He subsequently moved to the University of Montreal, where he received his Ph.D. in 1953. Guillemin then joined the Department of Physiology at the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, where he remained until 1970, pursuing his studies on the hormonal control of the pituitary gland, in particular the hormones produced by the hypothalamus, and on neurotransmitters such as endorphins. It was for this work that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine (with A.V. Shally) in 1977. In 1970 he moved to the Salk Institute at La Jolla, California, where he founded the Laboratories for Neuroendocrinology, before going to the Whittier Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology in La Jolla in 1989. He is also Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego. His studies have led to the isolation of a variety of hormones, including somatocrinin or growth hormone-releasing factor, somatostatin, which is fundamental to the understanding of diabetes, and a number of the hormones that regulate female sexual development. He is a member of many organisations, including the US National Academy of Sciences and the French Académie des Sciences. His interests extend beyond the boundaries of research alone: in addition to writing on the history of medicine, he collects pre-Columbian art and uses the computer to create paintings that have been exhibited in a number of galleries in the United States, Mexico and Italy. |
