Nobel Laureate for Peace, 1980 Adolfo Pérez Esquivel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1931. He completed his university education at the National School of Fine Arts and at the National University of La Plata. He then taught for 25 years at the primary, secondary and university levels. As a plastic artist, he has produced intensely in various mediums and has exhibited internationally. In the 1960's, Adolfo Perez Esquivel began working with popular organizations involved in the Christian non-violence movement in Latin America. In 1974, he was elected general coordinator for Latin America of grassroots groups that promoted the liberation of the continent through non-violent means. When the authors of the Argentine military coup of 1976 began a policy of systematic repression, he contributed to the formation and strengthening of ties between popular organizations that defended human rights and supported the families of victims. The Servicio Paz y Justicia which he founded evolved from this context and served as an instrument for the defence of human rights through the promotion of an international campaign that denounced the atrocities committed by the military regime. In 1975, Adolfo Perez Esquivel was detained by the Brazilian military police, and again in 1976, together with Latin American and North American bishops in Ecuador and again in 1977, in Buenos Aires, at the Headquarters of the Federal Police, where he was tortured, held without due process, and liberated only 14 months later. While imprisoned, he received, among other recognitions, the Pope John XXIII's Peace Memorial. In 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts in the defence of human rights. He is President of the Honorary Council of the Latin American Servicio Paz y Justicia and of the International League for the Rights and Liberation of Peoples (Milan, Italy), and member of the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal. He has published The Poncho Christ and Walking Together With the People (1995) on the experiences of non-violence in Latin America. See also: http://www.wamani.apc.org/ |
