Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1991 Richard R. Ernst was born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1933. After his first boyhood experiments with chemicals discovered in the attic, he enrolled at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH-Z), where he received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering in 1956 and his Ph.D. in 1962, working on high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance, a field in its infancy at the time. Immediately afterwards he left the university to continue his scientific work with Varian Associates in Palo Alto, California, aiming to find a concrete application for his research, which had until then been highly theoretical. In 1968 Ernst returned to ETH-Z, where he became director of research and professor of Physical Chemistry, a position he still holds. His research has dealt with bi and tridimensional spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and their practical applications, especially in the medical field. It was for his contribution to NMR spectroscopy that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1991. Since 1990, he has been President of the ETH-Z Research Council. He is a member of numerous international institutions, including the American Physical Society, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance, the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher, the Royal Society of London and the science academies of India and Korea. In addition to his passion for chemistry, Ernst is an avid musician - as a youth he had considered becoming a cellist or composer - and collector of Asian art, especially Tibetan scroll paintings.
