Ralph Dahrendorf was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1929. He studied Classics, Philosophy and Sociology at Hamburg and London. From 1957 to 1968, he was Visiting Professor of Sociology at Hamburg, Tubingen and Konstanz, member of the Centre for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences in Palo Alto, California (from 1957 to 1958) and Visiting Professor at Columbia University (1960).

His political career as a Liberal led him into the Land parliament of Baden-Württemberg and in 1968 into the Federal German Parliament and Willy Brandt's first government as a Minister of State in the Foreign Office. In 1970 he was appointed a member of the Commission of the European Communities where he was responsible for foreign trade and external relations, and later for research.

In 1974 he moved to Britain and for ten years he was Director of the London School of Economics. Among the many positions he has held, he was a Trustee of the Ford Foundation (from 1975 to 1987) and has been a Trustee of the Charities Aid Foundation since 1993. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Central and East European Publishing Project (since 1986). He is currently Warden of St. Antony's College, Oxford and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

He is the author of numerous books, among which The Modern Social Conflict (1988), Reflections on the Revolution in Europe (1990).
